Instructor: Christopher Barry, P.E.
You don’t need a degree to match a prop to the engine and boat, and this course is not about propeller design per se. It is about selecting the right propeller, essentially from a catalog. To assist you in this task, we’ll explore the anatomy of the propeller—from physical and hydrodynamic characteristics to cavitation and hull effects. You will review resistance calculations, inspect trial data, and analyze vibration.
In the end, you should be able to select appropriate propellers for various hullforms, keeping in mind efficiency and thrust loads. In closing, we’ll also touch upon surface-piercing props and jets.
Materials for this course include a 32-page text as well as prop-calculating formulae and spreadsheets created by the instructor.
For starters, you will need to study the text. In Part Two, you will work on and attempt to solve several problems on your own. Part Three will be an opportunity to review your work and to compare it with your instructor's solutions.
This is a "work at your own pace" course. You will have access to all materials for 120 days from the time that you first register. You will have contact with your instructor via email and the course forums.ProBoat E-Training is a non-traditional approach to training and education for the marine industry.
